Artificial Intelligence for Diagnosing Focal Epilepsy: A collaborative project to co-develop an information sheet with patients and their families
At UCL, Dr Konrad Wagstyl and Dr Sophie Adler co-lead the MELD project, an international collaboration between epilepsy hospitals worldwide, which creates AI tools to assist in the identification of epilepsy causing abnormalities on MRI scans. In collaboration with Dr Jonny O’Muircheartaigh (a neuroscientist at KCL) and epilepsy charities (Epilepsy Research UK and Young Epilepsy), the team set out to find out how patients and their families feel about this type of research and to work with them to co-create an information sheet about the MELD Project.

New guidance on how to support young people during brain scanning co-developed with young people with epilepsy
The OPM Collaboration set out to raise the voice of young people with epilepsy. In partnership with Young Epilepsy, the project co-designed key elements of a new wearable brain scanning technology: OPM-MEG. Through the project, new insights and guidance have been published on how to better support young people with epilepsy during the brain scanning process of this emerging technology.

Centre wins grant for new project exploring dementia within Parkinson’s disease
A project focused on supporting dialogue and raising awareness of dementia within the Parkinson’s community has been funded by a Wellcome Research Enrichment – Public Engagement grant. Dr Rimona Weil, Principal Investigator of the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging’s Vision in Parkinson’s Disease research team and a Principal Investigator at the UCL Dementia Research Centre, will lead the project, which aims to better involve patients in research targeting dementia in Parkinson’s.

Embedding a culture of public engagement
Since 2018, the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging have been running a long-term culture change study on the attitudes and perceptions of staff towards public engagement. In 2020, the study found that the culture of public engagement remains strong and is something the Centre and the public engagement team should be truly proud of.

Centre gains funding to co-produce film script on awareness and dementia
A project aiming to develop a feature film exploring self-awareness in dementia has been funded by the UCL Knowledge Exchange Fund. UCL’s Dr Steve Fleming and Dr Jonathan Huntley will partner with award winning film makers Will Robinson and Ed Christmas to co-develop a film script with people with Alzheimer’s and those that care for people with Alzheimer’s.
